Enter Indonesia: startup operations for APAC founders

Startup founders from Singapore, Malaysia, and other APAC markets who will operate in Indonesia need more than a legal entity: sales, invoicing, bookkeeping, and Indonesian-language customer service systems that run on WIB time. Zirafah Zenith sets up that operating layer in English and Bahasa Indonesia, and refers you to legal and tax advisers for the legal side.

Who it is for

Founders and startup teams based in Singapore, Malaysia, or elsewhere in APAC who are serving, or about to serve, customers in Indonesia, whether through a local entity or a partner.

Why the market is attractive, and why operations need preparing

Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to approach US$100 billion in GMV in 2025, up 14% (e-Conomy SEA 2025). A large market does not make operating there automatically easy: Indonesian customers expect communication, sales documents, and support in the language and channels they use, and finances across entities need to stay tidy.

Legal entity: what to know, and who helps

An individual PT (PT Perorangan) can only be established by one Indonesian citizen and is meant for micro and small businesses (Hukumonline). Foreign ownership generally goes through a PT PMA. Capital requirements, licensing, and permitted sectors can change, so confirm with a notary or legal adviser.

Zirafah Zenith does not help with company incorporation, licensing, visas, tax, or legal advice. We set up operating systems on top of the structure you choose with your advisers, and can refer you to suitable partners.

What we do

  • Localise systems for the Indonesian market: sales documents, invoices, and communication in Bahasa Indonesia, plus handling of rupiah and other currencies.
  • Set up CRM for Indonesian sales flows, including channels customers use such as WhatsApp, subject to technical feasibility.
  • Design multi-entity, multi-currency bookkeeping between your home-country and Indonesian entities.
  • Set up customer service and reporting readable by both regional and local teams.
  • Draft tidy data governance; review of personal data protection obligations (the PDP Law) is done by your legal adviser.
  • Work in English and Bahasa Indonesia, on WIB time.

What is not included

  • Setting up a PT or PT PMA, business licensing, and immigration matters.
  • Tax filing, and formal legal or tax consulting.
  • Hiring a local team and selling on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign founder use a PT Perorangan?

Generally no. A PT Perorangan can only be established by one Indonesian citizen and is meant for micro and small businesses. Foreign ownership generally goes through a PT PMA; confirm current rules with a notary or legal adviser.

Do you help set up a PT PMA?

No. Incorporation and licensing are handled by notaries or legal advisers. We set up operating systems on top of the structure you choose, and can refer you to partners.

Can you work in English?

Yes. Discussions, documentation, and training are available in English and Bahasa Indonesia, on WIB (GMT+7) time.

How do you handle books across Singapore or Malaysia and Indonesia?

We design multi-entity, multi-currency bookkeeping so each entity's reports and the consolidation stay consistent. Tax obligations and official reporting remain with your tax adviser.

Can the system handle WhatsApp?

Often, through integrations available in common CRM tools or from third parties. We check feasibility during discovery before any commitment.
