Small Manufacturers: Connecting Orders, Production and Stock
Small manufacturers rarely need a giant ERP. What they need is a trustworthy answer to "when will this order be ready".
Three questions you must be able to answer
- Whether there is enough raw material for this order.
- What production is working on and how long the queue is.
- A realistic delivery date for a new order.
If all three live only in the production manager's head, the business cannot grow past one person.
Start with the bill of materials
Every product has a list of materials and quantities. Even a simple version lets the system calculate material needs from incoming orders instead of guessing.
Custom orders
Many small producers build to different specifications each time. Store the specification on the order, not in a conversation, and use one order number across sales, production and shipping.
Honest date promises
A delivery date that always slips damages more than a longer date that is kept. Calculate from the real production queue, not from the sales team's hopes.
The usual system path
Zoho CRM for orders and customers, Zoho Inventory for materials and finished goods, and a simple production app with Zoho Creator when the flow is unusual. Combine the reporting so one page answers all three questions above.
Start small and real
Run it for one product line for a month, compare promised dates with reality, then adjust.
