When Do You Need a Custom App in Zoho Creator?
Not every business process fits a ready-made app. Zoho Creator lets you build your own with little code. The question is when that is the right choice, and when it is simply too much.
What Zoho Creator is
Zoho Creator is a low-code platform for building business apps: forms, approval flows, reports and dashboards. Most of it is built with visual configuration, and custom logic can be written in Zoho's scripting language, called Deluge. The apps can connect with other Zoho apps.
A healthy order of consideration
- Is this need already served by an existing Zoho app with ordinary configuration?
- If not, can it be served with custom modules, fields and automation inside that app?
- Only if it still does not fit, consider a custom app.
This order matters because a custom app is something that must be maintained. The less you build yourself, the less there is to fix later.
When a custom app makes sense
- Your core process has no equivalent in a ready-made app, for example a field inspection flow, a multi-level internal request or a special asset register.
- You currently run it on spreadsheets and email, and the process is stable and understood by everyone.
- There is a defined group of users whose access rights need tight control.
- Data from this app must join the CRM or the books.
When you should not
- The process is not agreed and changes every week.
- An existing Zoho app would actually be enough, but has not been configured well.
- Nobody will be responsible for maintaining it.
- The goal is only to look advanced.
Who maintains it?
A custom app is not finished on go-live day. There will be change requests, new users and fixes. Decide early who owns it on your side, where the documentation lives, and who helps when something breaks. We provide this support through our custom development service and training and support.
Start with a small version
Build the most frequently used flow first, test it with real users for a few weeks, then add more. An app that grows from real needs is almost always better than one designed in full at the start.
