How Far Should an AI Agent Run Your Sales?
The promise that AI will handle everything sounds attractive. In sales, the most valuable part is exactly the part you should not hand over.
What is quick and cheap to hand over
Record keeping, summaries, reminders, draft messages and data cleaning. This work eats sales time but builds no relationships. Handing it over almost always pays.
What you should not hand over
- Negotiation and price. Context, history and willingness to take a risk belong to people.
- Trust. B2B customers buy from people they trust. An automated message that feels automated wears that trust down.
- Decisions outside the rules. An agent follows patterns. The best customers are often the cases that do not fit the pattern.
Three simple safeguards
- Human approval for every outgoing message during the first month.
- A readable log. Every agent action is recorded in the CRM with its reason.
- A stop button. Anyone on the team can switch the automation off without technical permission.
Measure honestly
Compare before and after: response time, reply rate and complaints. If response is faster but customer replies fall, your automation is too aggressive.
A better question
Not "what can we automate" but "what will sales do with the time it gets back". If the answer is more real conversations with customers, the direction is right. See also sales follow-up automation.
