Generative AI for startups: where it helps, and where it does not

Generative AI for a startup means using large language models and related AI to assist specific tasks inside a product or workflow, such as answering customer questions from your own documents, extracting data from forms, or drafting text. Zirafah Zenith helps founders pick the use cases where AI adds real value, build a small working version, and measure it before scaling. Many tasks do not need AI, and we say so.

Common use cases and the risk to manage in each

Typical generative AI use cases for startups
Use caseTypical buildMain risk, and how it is managed
Customer support assistantAnswers drawn from your own documents, with handover to a personWrong or invented answers: answers are grounded in your documents and uncertain cases go to a person
Document and data extraction (invoices, forms, IDs)Extract fields, then human review, then into your systemErrors in key fields: validation rules and a review queue
Drafting (emails, product text, Bahasa Indonesia content)Draft generated, edited by a personTone and factual accuracy: a person edits before anything is sent
Internal knowledge searchSearch and summarise across internal documentsExposing restricted information: access rules follow existing permissions
Classification and triage (tickets, leads)Tag and route incoming itemsMisrouting: confidence thresholds and spot checks
An honest note. Generative AI output can be wrong, and it varies between runs and between models. We design every feature with review points, and we do not promise a specific accuracy. If a form, a rule, or a simple automation solves the problem more reliably and more cheaply, we will recommend that instead.

How we work

  • Pick one or two use cases where the task is frequent, the cost of an error is manageable, and success is measurable.
  • Build a small prototype using your real examples, including Bahasa Indonesia where relevant.
  • Set pass criteria before testing, then evaluate on a test set of real cases, not on demos.
  • Integrate into your product or workflow, with human review where errors would matter.
  • Monitor quality and cost after launch, since usage-based model fees grow with volume.

Personal data and AI providers

Sending customer data to an AI provider is a data-handling decision. Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP, Law No. 27 of 2022) has been in full effect since October 17, 2024 (Hukumonline). We design the flow to send as little personal data as needed and to keep records of what goes where. Whether a given flow is lawful for your business is for your legal adviser to confirm.

Where existing tools already cover the need

Some needs are already covered by AI features inside tools you already use. We check that first, because configuring an existing feature costs far less than building one.

What is not included

  • Training new foundation models.
  • Guarantees of accuracy, or of savings in staff time or cost.
  • Fully automated decisions in medical, legal, or financial matters without human review.
  • Model usage fees, which are billed to you directly by the provider.
How it works

From use case to a measured feature

Four steps.

01

Choose

Pick the use case and write down what success looks like.

02

Prototype

Build a small version using your real examples.

03

Evaluate

Test against pass criteria set in advance.

04

Integrate & monitor

Add it to the product, with review points and cost tracking.

What affects cost

Number of use cases, volume of requests, how much testing the task needs, integration complexity, and hosting. Model fees are ongoing and grow with usage. A written estimate follows the first conversation; see the Pricing page for general factors.

Frequently asked questions

How can a startup use generative AI?

The most reliable uses are narrow, frequent tasks with a review step: answering support questions from your own documents, extracting data from forms, drafting text, searching internal knowledge, and routing incoming items.

Do we need to train our own AI model?

Almost never. Most startup use cases use existing models, combined with your own documents and rules. Training a model from scratch is a far larger and costlier undertaking.

Is it safe to send customer data to an AI provider?

It depends on what data, which provider, and under which terms. We design flows to send as little personal data as needed. Compliance with the Personal Data Protection Law is confirmed with your legal adviser.

How accurate will it be?

We cannot promise a specific accuracy. We set pass criteria before testing, measure against real cases, and add review steps wherever errors would matter.

Does it work well in Bahasa Indonesia?

Quality varies by model and task. We test with your real Indonesian-language examples before committing.

What does generative AI cost to run?

Model providers usually charge by usage, so cost grows with volume. We estimate it from your expected volume and track it after launch.
