Mobile app development for startups in Indonesia & APAC

Mobile app development for a startup means building an Android and iOS app that real users install and keep using. Zirafah Zenith helps founders decide between native and cross-platform approaches, build a first version in stages, and release it to Google Play and the Apple App Store. If you have not yet validated the problem, we will say so and suggest a lighter test first.

Why mobile-first matters in Indonesia

DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report counts 230 million internet users in Indonesia (80.5% of the population) and 331 million cellular mobile connections (116% of the population) as of October 2025. Connections exceed people because many users hold more than one SIM, but the direction is clear: for most Indonesian consumer products, the phone is the main screen (DataReportal).

Do you need an app yet?

An app is one of the more expensive ways to test an idea. If the problem is not yet validated, a web app or a low-code build usually answers the question faster. See Idea Validation and MVP Build. We build the app when the evidence says users need one.

Native, cross-platform, or web first?

Common approaches and when each fits
ApproachBest whenTrade-off
Native Android (Kotlin, Java)You need the deepest access to Android features and performanceSeparate codebase from iOS
Native iOS (Swift)You need the deepest access to iOS features, or your audience is mainly on iPhoneSeparate codebase from Android
Cross-platform (Flutter, React Native)You want one codebase for both platforms and a faster first releaseSome device-specific features may need extra native work
Web app or progressive web app firstYou want the fastest and cheapest test with real usersLess store visibility and limited access to some device features

Which platform comes first depends on your audience, not on preference. We check which devices your prospects actually use during validation rather than assuming.

Designing for Indonesian users

  • Interfaces in Bahasa Indonesia, with English where your audience needs it.
  • Performance on mid-range phones and slower or unstable connections, especially outside large cities.
  • Local payment methods, such as bank transfer, e-wallets, and QRIS, depend on your payment provider and its requirements; we confirm feasibility with the provider before committing.
  • Personal data handling in line with the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP, Law No. 27 of 2022), in full effect since October 17, 2024. Your legal adviser confirms what applies to you (Hukumonline).

What we do

  • Define the core features of the first version and what is deferred.
  • Design user flows and screens, and test them with real users before building everything.
  • Build the Android and iOS app, with the back-end services and APIs it needs.
  • Set up analytics so you can see what users actually do.
  • Prepare and submit the app to Google Play and the Apple App Store, with accounts registered in your company’s name.
  • Hand over source code, documentation, and store access.

What is not included

  • A guarantee of app store approval; Apple and Google decide, and their rules change.
  • Developer account and store fees, which are paid by you directly.
  • User acquisition and advertising; see Digital Marketing.
  • Guarantees of performance at a specific user volume.
How it works

From scope to the app stores

A staged way of working.

01

Scope

Core features, platform choice, and boundaries are agreed in writing.

02

Design & test

Screens and flows are designed and tried with real users.

03

Build & test

Built in small releases, tested on real devices.

04

Release & support

Store submission, handover, and agreed support after launch.

What affects cost

Number of platforms and screens, back-end complexity, integrations such as payments or maps, and the level of polish needed. Apps also need updates when the operating systems change, so plan for maintenance. A written estimate follows the first conversation; see the Pricing page for general factors.

Frequently asked questions

Should a startup build native or cross-platform apps?

Cross-platform tools such as Flutter or React Native suit most first versions because one codebase serves both platforms. Native makes sense when you need the deepest device access or top performance on one platform.

Should we build Android or iOS first?

It depends on where your audience is. We check the devices your prospects actually use during validation, and let that decide rather than preference.

Do you publish the app to Google Play and the App Store?

Yes, we prepare and submit it, with the store accounts registered in your company's name. Apple and Google make the approval decision and their requirements change, so approval cannot be guaranteed.

Can we start with a web app and build the mobile app later?

Yes, and it is often the cheaper way to test. A tested web product also becomes a good specification for the later mobile app.

How long does it take to build a mobile app?

It depends on scope. We set a timeline after the core features are mapped and agreed, and we do not promise a fixed duration.

Does an app need maintenance after launch?

Yes. Operating system and store requirements change regularly, so apps need periodic updates. Support terms are agreed before launch.
